I have often wondered what adapting an action novel for the screen would be like, there being a markedly different approach to even the literary form and the screenplay written for adapting the matter to film. The answer is to be sought from the Jack Reachers, Jack Ryans, James Bonds, and the Jason Bournes of the world, each of them having headed immensely popular franchises. For that matter, Cruise has given himself to the action genre unflinchingly like dye to the wool, what with him performing his own stunts at his age being an unprecedented feat of sorts. While he virtually owns the ‘Mission Impossible’ franchise in his role of MI6 secret agent Ethan Hunt, still going strong after its sixth instalment made all the right noises in the right places for the right reasons, another one of his action franchises has visibly struggled with taking off and finding a sort of unanimous acceptance among fans — Jack Reacher.
‘Jack Reacher’, the fictional brainchild of British author Lee Child and a bonafide badass, joining the long list of ex-marine vigilante arse kickers from the pens of a number of authors, has had two film adaptations to date, remarkably less than any one of the other action heroes mentioned above despite there being a wealth of literature devoted to him (23 books), both starring Tom Cruise in the titular role and serving as standalone stories dictating the character’s exploits following his origins.
The first one finds its allegiance in the 2005 Child novel ‘One Shot’ while the second’s in its title, ‘Never Go Back’. Both films had a decent worldwide gross but ended up under-performing in the home circuit, while struggling critically as well; and the internet would state that they weren’t adored by fans of Reacher or Cruise much either. In these circumstances, while a sequel would seem highly unlikely given the unfavourable reception, we decode all the news we have regarding what could come of the third film and whether it would be happening or not. The worldwide search is over for the new Jack Reacher, with Titans star Alan Ritchson set to play the 6ft 5in hero in the Amazon Studios series of author Lee Child's bestselling books. The two brothers intend to write the next few novels together after which Andrew Grant will 'strike out on his own'. The the 25th novel in the series, The Sentinel, was published on 27 October 2020, and was the first Jack Reacher book to be co-authored by and credited to both Child brothers. Is Jack Reacher 3 happening?
According to latest reports, Lee Child has signed a deal with the television divisions of both Paramount and Skydance, the distributors and producers of both of Cruise’s popular franchises ‘Jack Reacher’ and ‘Mission Impossible’, to produce a television series based on the character. While not much about it isn’t known either, it is pretty clear that the makers wish to take the ‘Jack Ryan’ route when none of their films worked either. The TV series starring John Krasinski ended up being a hit last year with both fans and critics, and it is not difficult to see why the makers too would tip in the favour of telling Reacher’s standalone stories as an anthology series or in an episodic nature. More so, the stability of Netflix and other streaming and television mediums have often proven antidotes to dwindling returns on the films, so this is not going to be a first.
As for the plot, one cannot be too certain since while only two of the novels have yet been adapted for the screen, we still have 21 more to go. Expect an intermixing of sorts, since the novels are not a tall order to be adapted across an entire season, unlike ‘Game of Thrones’, say. The plot details cannot be told for certain as of now, since there is no official word on how the makers wish to take this and approach the television series, but the long and short of it is that a third film in the continued franchise won’t be happening after ‘Never Go Back’. This might mean bad news for fans of the franchise, but unfortunately so, that’s the way the cookie crumbles in Hollywood.
Tom Cruise’s Exit: Who can be the next Jack Reacher?
Yes, you read that right. With the news of no new films happening in the ‘Jack Reacher’ franchise, also comes the news that Tom Cruise won’t be reprising his role in any capacity. Instead, for television, the makers, including Lee Child, would be going the way of the novels and would be searching for an actor that would fit the physical description of him as laid out in the books. The principal cause of dissatisfaction here, as pointed out by some fans too, would be Tom Cruise’s height at 5 feet 7 inches, and his physicality. Reacher in the books is described as a formidable man, measuring up at 6 feet 5 inches, blonde and weighing in at 250 pounds.
According to Lee Childs, Reacher’s size and heftiness in the books was a metaphor for an “unstoppable force”, which Cruise portrayed “in his own way.” Furthermore, this is what he had to say about Cruise being dropped for the sequel and why it was important for them to get the casting right: “I really enjoyed working with Cruise. He’s a really, really nice guy. We had a lot of fun. But ultimately the readers are right. The size of Reacher is really, really important and it’s a big component of who he is. The idea is that when Reacher walks into a room, you’re all a little nervous just for that first minute. And Cruise, for all his talent, didn’t have that physicality. So what I’ve decided to do is – there won’t be any more movies with Tom Cruise. Instead we’re going to take it to Netflix or something like that. Long-form streaming television, with a completely new actor. We’re rebooting and starting over and we’re going to try and find the perfect guy.”
It is quite clear that while the makers hold a lot of respect for Cruise and what he did in the two films in which he portrayed the eponymous character, they will be moving on to a new actor, thus meaning Cruise’s retirement from the role. Reports state that Childs wants to involve a number of fans that were dissatisfied with Cruise’s casting to seek suggestions for the new casting to get the new actor, his looks and his physicality absolutely right.
Jack Reacher 3 Crew: Who can be behind it?
Since a third movie most definitely would not be happening, that question is out of the window. As for the rebooted TV series, nothing apart from the announcement that it would be happening is known, so we will have to wait a fair bit to know more about that. That too rules out the possibility of the return of either Christopher McQuarrie, who has now had a successful run with Cruise directing two films in the MI franchise, and Edward Zwick, the director of the two Jack Reacher films. The only confirmation on this as of now is that Lee Childs will be directly involved in the production process of the TV show, as opposed to only his partial involvement in the films, having signed a deal with Skydance TV and Paramount TV, and perhaps also serve in the capacity of a screenwriter or a story consultant. Jack Reacher 3 Release Date: When can it premiere?
I just want to make sure that we are talking about the TV series here, because as I have established in the sections before this, a third ‘Jack Reacher’ film won’t be happening. The unfortunate thing is that the release date of the Jack Reacher TV series isn’t currently known either, but we can safely assume that it would soon be on the writing boards, now that it has been announced with much fervour. From the looks of it, it would also seem that the project would head over to Netflix. Expect the pilot to air any time beyond early 2021, assuming enough time for casting, locations and the script to be finalised before it finally goes on board.

Tom Cruise is Jack Reacher no more. The first Jack Reacher movie did fairly well, but Jack Reacher: Never Go Back wasn’t nearly as well received.

That said, the original Jack Reacher books writer, Lee Child, said Cruise wasn’t the right fit for the movies, so bettors need to consider someone a bit closer to the character description from the source material.
In the Jack Reacher books, the character is tall, big, and rather imposing. Tom Cruise really never fit the bill, and it’s arguable they get it right the second time around.
Let’s look at the leading candidates based on odds and see if we can’t come away with a Jack Reacher prediction.
Stapleton is the right age and certainly isn’t small, while he fits the character’s job description thanks to having played FBI agent Kurt Weller in the aforementioned Blindspot.
He’s in the running for those reasons, while the final season of Blindspot airs in 2020. He’ll be free to work, but he isn’t a big name, and some would say he’s not even the right pick for his current role.
That, and Stapleton is far from physically imposing. If they want to get Jack Reacher right, I’m not sure this is the way to do it.
Jake McLaughlin (7.00)

A former soldier with good build and reasonable height, Jake McLaughlin wouldn’t be the worst choice to take over the Jack Reacher role.
His versatility and experience in similar subject matter through Quantico and In the Valley of Elah make him a viable option.
Much like Stapleton, McLaughlin still doesn’t have overly imposing size or strength, and he’s far from a household name.
Nobody will balk at Krasinski, as he’s already proven his worth in gold as a military-grade detective due to his work in Jack Ryan.
Krasinski brings humanity to an ugly job, while his latest Amazon series isn’t the first time he’s flexed his muscle on screen. Krasinski was also surprisingly believable as a soldier in 13 Hours.
I know most people just know him as Jim from The Office, but Krasinski is a bit of a badass. He does offer the ideal height, and he has the action star chops to handle this role, but is he as physically imposing as he’d need to be? One could argue no.
There is also the issue of availability. Jack Ryan was ordered for a third season, and if more follow — not to mention Krasinski’s burgeoning film career — he may be too busy to consider this gig.
Matthew McConaughey (11.00)

This is a weird one, I’ll admit. I’m a fan of McConaughey, though, and he has flashed some really nice ability as an action star in The Gentlemen and The Dark Tower.
He also did his best work as — you guessed it — a detective in the first season of True Detective.
The issue here is McConaughey really only has one voice to offer, he may be a tad too old for the part, and he isn’t a true action star.
He is also getting movie offers left and right, so returning to television for a full-fledged series just doesn’t make much sense for him.
This is the first one I actually like. The man known best as The Kingslayer (Game of Thrones’ own Jaime Lannister) certainly knows his way around some action.
This gives the Jack Reacher series a little star power, while we know Nikolaj Coster-Waldau offers some grit due to his turns in Exit Plan, Domino, and Shot Caller.
Coster-Waldau has the star power, the acting chops, and also has the size (6’3”) to be the perfect pick to be the next Jack Reacher.
Dolph Lundgren (15.00)
I’m shocked the odds are this good for this one. Lundgren is still staying busy at 62 years old and is one of the most iconic action movie stars on the planet.
Age could be a bit of a problem here, while it’s worth wondering if he can alter his thick accent and/or has the time to take this one. The towering 6’5” Swede does not want for size or physical ability, however.
Ditto for Dwayne Johnson, who has put his elite size and athleticism on display in the WWE, along with a long line of blockbuster franchises.
The Rock is as big as anyone you’ll find, both in stature and in star power. He’s no stranger to intense action, and his Walking Tall movie is an easy example of how easily he could pull this role off.
Availability would be the problem here. The Rock is simply in too high of demand to commit to a Jack Reacher series.
Chris Hemsworth (23.00)
One of the biggest movie stars right now is Chris Hemsworth. His name isn’t quite as recognizable as The Rock on a wide scale, but he’s quite close.
Best known as Thor from The Avengers, Hemsworth checks off every box in terms of size, strength, physical build, action experience, and acting ability.
This is a dream pick for the makers of the new Jack Reacher TV show, but landing this guy could prove difficult. Hemsworth further boosted his popularity with an impressive run in Netflix’s Extraction, making the dip to television seem unlikely.
Another massive name in movies these days is Chris Pratt, who has worked hard to get his body close to the level of some of the imposing figures on this list.
If the Jack Reacher series wanted a comedic approach in any regard, he’d fit right in.

He’s also proven his ability as an action star thanks to his work in Jurassic World and Guardians of the Galaxy, while some have suggested he’d be good to take over as the next Indiana Jones.
Daniel Craig (34.00)
Lastly, we come to Craig, who can probably do anything after crushing it as James Bond. He’s arguably the best pure actor on this list, but he’s also one of the oldest and easily the smallest.
If the new Jack Reacher show wants to be different from the movies, going with Craig wouldn’t be much of an upgrade.
Coming away with a prediction for who plays Jack Reacher next isn’t that easy, seeing as this list doesn’t have a ton of names that make great sense.
The picks that do make sense have some type of flaw, or they are too big of stars to be realistic options for the studio. Bettors can only work with what Betway gives them, though.
Given the names seen above, I like Nikolaj Coster-Waldau the most.
He offers pretty nice value, he’s still a relatively big star, he has solid size, and he’s an elite actor. He honestly checks all of the boxes, and due to a movie career that is merely pedestrian in terms of success, availability wouldn’t be a terrible issue.
